Hi to all of you in the blog-o-sphere!
I have met a number of people involved in the Main Library Redevelopment over the past few weeks, but for those of you who don’t know who I am and why I’m posting this, I hope the following is interesting at best and if not, useful at worst!
I’m Mike Kelly and I have started my handover from SPORT Manchester (the University’s sport service) into the Library team as Library Space Project Manager. I start full time on Mon, 22 June but for the next four weeks I’ll be involved in a mixture of work across both teams.
The meetings I’ve been a part of so far have been really interesting and it shows the importance of the Main Library Redevelopment. I’m very excited to be involved and can’t wait to see the final outcome – amazing library spaces for all. The project covers many areas that I have a keen interest in – facility management, space design, organisational development, project management, service delivery and customer experience to name but a few.
It’s nice to be able to say that I am a neighbour of the Library. Living only a few hundred meters away from central campus I see the university change month by month; coming alive during the summer, quieting down over Christmas and thriving during welcome week.
I am a proud Mancunian, having lived in Greater Manchester all my life and in the city centre for the past 10 years or so. I studied Human Geography at Manchester Metropolitan University and lived in Fallowfield at the peak of ‘student land’ in the late nineties. I have worked in education for over a decade, managing facilities, projects, developments and coordinating service delivery across a range of organisations. I have a keen interest in culture and the creative industries and ran a number of successful businesses in the music industry during the noughties.
I wouldn’t be surprised if you said to yourself “but he’s never worked in a library, I’ve been through his Linked In!” and you’d be right. However, with a project such as this, many of the fundamental principles are similar (if not universal, broadly speaking) to other projects. I will bring another perspective to the project, complete with a bucket load of passion and energy. Having said that, one of the key factors, in my mind, is to seek support and advice from the people in the know – the staff and users. I’m genuinely interested in reading your comments and hearing your ideas, so be sure to get involved and contribute to the conversation.
Until then, have a great week!
Some things to look forward to: Parklife at Heaton Park on Sat 6/Sun 7 June (featuring Grace Jones), the start of MIF 2015 and Manchester Day on Sun 14 June – there’s an amazing summer ahead.
