Areas to Explore

My first major meeting this week was our fortnightly Library Design Meeting. Attended by members from various teams involved with the Main Library Redevelopment, including Ryder Architects, Library staff and colleagues from Estates, we spent the time defining what topic each remaining meeting in 2015 would cover. Areas that we will be exploring further include; wayfinding/signage, bespoke joinery, and furniture.

Scheduled to precede each Library Design Meeting is a Communication meeting with members of the Library’s Leadership Team and the Strategic Marketing and Communications team. We assessed our communication plan and ensured all relevant aspects of the Redevelopment were covered and being managed as we needed.

I had a weekly meeting with the group of MBA students from the Alliance Manchester Business School who are working with our team on the Redevelopment as part of their course work. Their project will focus on identifying Library customers’ critical needs and using this to develop a tool to quantify risk as we prepare for the first phase of construction. It’s been great to start working with these students and to enable them to discuss areas of their project further with members of the Library team.

The Main Library has been a busy place this week as we’ve been helping our new and returning students familiarise themselves with the building and our services. I have been able to assist a few students with queries relating to printers, location of toilets and how to top up credits. I even had the chance to sit at the reception desk of the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons and experience the variety of questions and queries the team get asked at this site. It’s fantastic to see the enthusiasm and excitement of our new and returning students across the campus and I’d like to wish them all a warm welcome from The University of Manchester Library.

Have a great weekend.
